Montenegro is one of Europe’s emerging wellness destinations, with a wealth of activities to soothe body and mind. Here, the strains of modern living feel a lifetime away, thanks to the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle and a landscape rich in natural goodness. Every taste is catered for – from specialist wilderness retreats, to winter spas and coastal resorts close to  Luštica Bay  itself.

It’s impossible to talk about relaxation and wellness without mentioning the Montenegrin landscape, which has a profound restorative effect. The unspoiled coastline, the startlingly sheer mountains, the clear waters of the Adriatic, the peace of the inland lakes, the virgin forests… the sight of these alone is enough to lift the spirits and leave your cares behind.

Little wonder, then, that you’ll find yoga and thai chi retreats held in settings that make the most of these landscapes. The  Lake Skadar yoga retreat , set in the Lake Skadar National Park, is a popular choice. The purity of the lake and the energising properties of the beaches and panoramic viewpoints make this an ideal spot for strengthening your practice, supported by an instructor with 20 years’ experience. A typical day here might involve one or two yoga classes, with the rest of your time spent taking in the richness of the surrounding landscape. Activities on offer include hikes to the waterfalls of the Orahovo (Walnut) Valley, kayaking to the Island Monasteries, swimming in the freshwater lakes, and travelling to see the natural pools and waterfalls on the northern shores.

If your idea of relaxation is more along the lines of days spent being pampered in a spa, then Montenegro has a number of notable hotels offering world-class spa treatments. The therapists at  Splendid Spa  draw on indigenous plants from the beautiful coastal landscape to modern spa treatments aimed at awakening and engaging the senses. The 5-star hotel Splendid itself sits in the coastal town of Becici, near to the beautiful, historic destinations of Budva and  Kotor , though the spa is also a short drive from  Luštica Bay .

Bianca Resort  is another world-class spa destination, albeit in a very different setting. Such are the contrasts that this small country encompasses that within a few hours drive from the coast and its sandy beaches, you can find yourself among snow-capped mountains. This is the setting for  Bianca Spa , in the pretty resort of Kolašin. With its alpine look and cosy feel,  Bianca’s Energy Clinic  is the ideal winter spa destination. The therapists here are trained in Balinese, Hawaiian and Thai massage techniques – perfect for soothing sore muscles after a day on the slopes. There’s also a heated outdoor pool and full fitness suite, plus aromatherapy, reflexology and beauty treatments.
