There’s no better way to understand the Montenegrin way of life than immersing yourself in its deep and meaningful music.

Local instruments are played to tell the most beautiful story of how Montenegro has evolved into a hidden gem along the southern Adriatic coastline. Rich with imagination and spirit, our musical identity defines who we are as a country and as people. If you’re new to Montenegrin music, not to worry! We’re here to get you up to speed.

For those of you who don’t know, Montenegrin music dates all the way back to Early Modern times, when Venetian lyricist, L. A. Guinta, created liturgies in the 15th century to convey the boundless beauty of its coastline. Since then, the Ottomans and Slavs have also made their cultural stamp on the country we call home. This blend of traditional Slavic folk with western melodies has helped shaped modern music as we know it today.

Modern pop, folk and classical music is seen as the genre of choice for most artists. Fusing together traditional instruments - the Davul, Gusle and Tamburica - with modern melodies is the norm with famous Montenegrin musicians, such as Sergej Cetkovic and Miloš Karadaglić. Now, our local jazz community has bucked the trend, and there’s no better place to see this fusion intertwine than at this year’s Petrovac Jazz Festival - just under an hour’s scenic drive away from Luštica Bay.

Petrovac Jazz Festival (1st - 10th September)

The town of Petrovac is a place where one of the most significant music events within our community is held. This is no more evident at the jazz festival, an annual multi-day festival where locals, tourists and some of the world’s most famous musicians come together to perform and enjoy the sweet sounds of rhythm and blues.

The festival originally started out as an event that brought the local community together through the power of music to promote cultural diversity in the region. Now in its 10th year, it is now one of the most sought-after events in the Autumn calendar, showcasing the most talented jazz artists from Europe and beyond.

From 1st - 10th September, head to the 16th century Venetian fortress, Kastel Lastva, for an unforgettable experience. With sandy beaches, palm trees and warm sea breezes, revel in the vibrant atmosphere with a unique blend of your favourite jazz tunes. Don’t miss out!
